Upgrading to BFGoodrich All-Terrain Tires
I’ve spent nearly three years traveling in my camper van, primarily across Scandinavia. Recently, I upgraded my van with all-terrain (AT) tires, and I’d like to share my experiences after using my BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires for one season. My write-up is not a technical review but a personal account of my experiences.

I strongly desire to explore serene and isolated locations, such as solitary lakes and rivers nestled deep within the forest. I intentionally steer clear of touristy areas, which results in my venturing into the wilderness. Consequently, I end up driving extensively on unpaved roads. Although this takes longer, it’s far more enjoyable than simply sticking to highways.
Enhanced Traction on Unpaved Roads
All-terrain (AT) tires are great for both paved roads and off-road terrains. Their tread patterns provide excellent dirt, gravel, mud, and sand traction. The larger tread blocks and deeper grooves help maintain grip on loose or uneven terrain, reducing the risk of slipping or getting stuck.
Real-World Experiences with AT Tires
Driving on Gravel Roads
The camper van felt like a completely different vehicle the first time I drove it on a steep forest road covered with loose gravel. I was surprised and impressed by the significant difference.
Driving on Sandy Beaches
The feeling was incredible as I drove along the Danish beach on the soft sand. Previously, I used to lower the tire pressure to increase traction and reduce the risk of getting stuck. However, with my new AT tires, I felt a sense of freedom for the first time without needing to lower the tire pressure.
Handling Mud and Wet Grass
Wet grass and muddy terrain can be challenging for tires designed and optimized for paved roads. They tend to fill with mud and lose grip. All-terrain (AT) tires are designed to eject mud during rotation, which is a game changer. Finally, driving through forest meadows becomes more comfortable. The performance difference in such terrain is remarkable.

Balance Between On-Road and Off-Road Capability
All-terrain (AT) tires are a fantastic choice for drivers seeking a perfect balance between on-road comfort and off-road capability. These tires are built to provide exceptional durability, traction, and versatility to conquer diverse driving conditions, making them suitable for various scenarios. The dramatic improvement in mobility for my camper van adventures is truly impressive.
Disadvantages and Concerns About AT Tires
Increased Tire Noise
Obviously, the all-terrain tires are slightly louder compared to my previous street tires, but in my opinion, they justproduce a different sound. However, the increase in tire noise is hardly noticeable.
Fuel Consumption and Rolling Resistance
I must admit to a slight 5-10% increase in fuel consumption. I can’t measure it precisely because my route characteristics constantly change, causing different fuel requirements.
Tire vibrations at High Speeds
My concerns about increased vibrations at high speeds were unfounded. The car feels smooth, and I don’t notice any extra vibrations caused by the tires, even at 160 km/h on a German Autobahn.

Adjusting Tire Pressure for Comfort
I reviewed the manufacturer-recommended load/pressure charts and discovered that I can lower the tire pressure significantly (from an average of 5.5 bar to 4.2 bar). This adjustment enhances driving comfort and decreases interior stress. The crucial factor is knowing the vehicle’s weight before each journey and adjusting the pressure accordingly.
Using a Digital Vehicle Weight Scale
From now on, I plan to use a digital vehicle weight scale to determine the optimum pressure for filling the tires.
The Aesthetic Appeal of AT Tires
The bold tread patterns and intricate sidewall designs really catch my eye. These details add a unique and adventurous aesthetic to the tire’s overall look, emphasizing its ruggedness. It’s all a matter of personal preference, but I find these details quite captivating, and they contribute significantly to the tire’s visual impact.
