Hence, this discrepancy in lighting led to a palette of colors in my photographs that often appeared unnatural and distorted. The challenge then became about capturing the moment and how to harmonize these conflicting colors to restore the natural look of the scenes I was capturing.

Experimenting with this effect by altering the lighting setup could have been thrilling. Of course, in the unique circumstances of shooting on a floating ice floe in the Arctic Ocean, modifying the lighting arrangement was not a viable alternative. But, for example, It’s not an option in street photography either.

At first glance, rectifying the colors on my computer seemed straightforward. Tweaking color balance, contrast, and white balance are considered foundational edits in photo processing. Therefore, I anticipated enhancing my images’ color fidelity would be relatively simple. Conversely, the unique, peculiar lighting conditions quickly dismantled this assumption.

Tweaking the colors in one segment of an image inadvertently skewed the hues in another, creating a visual dissonance rather than harmony. Therefore, it was a trial-and-error journey. By skipping the bleaching function during the color processing sequence, silver halide grains remain in the film emulsion along with the color dyes. The result is a black-and-white image superimposed on a color image, creating a distinctive look with reduced saturation and increased contrast and graininess.

Digital Bleach Bypass: Nik Color Efex Simulate Classic Film Effects

Nik Color Efex emulates this look. Instead of altering the physical film processing, the software applies this effect through digital post-processing.
