Imagine stepping into a land where the forests, lakes, and fields are open for exploration and enjoyment by everyone – a place where the beauty of nature isn’t just a visual treat but a shared experience accessible to all. Welcome to Sweden, where the ‘Every Man’s Right’ (or ‘Allemansrätten’ in Swedish) isn’t just a policy; it’s a way of life.

Freedom in an Outdoor Paradise

Breaking It Down: Here is How It Works:
- You can use private roads unless there is a sign saying otherwise.
- You can set up a camp and start a fireplace when you find a beautiful place to stay overnight. I always prefer being close to the water.
- You can access any beach, river, or lake, enjoying swimming, kayaking, or just the perfect quiet in the Swedish wild.
- You have free access to any land except private residences, the immediate vicinity of houses, and cultivated land. But trust me, you can find plenty of those places, especially far in the north.
The Beauty of the Wilderness

Sweden is the land of 100,000 lakes, countless islands, majestic rivers, breathtaking archipelagos, and 3,200 kilometers of coastline. Forests cover around 65% of Sweden’s total land area. The population density is also very low, especially in the wild north.
Exploring Sweden’s Wildlife: A Journey Through the Country’s Diverse Flora and Fauna

Sweden is home to imposing big beasts. You can spot bears, mooses, deers, wolverines, lynx, wild boars, raindeers, or wolves. I’m mentioning the few most spectacular ones.
There is plenty of moose and deer. I was lucky enough to see these beautiful animals several times. I’ve never seen any of the approximately 500-600 migrated wolfs from Finland and Russia. But trust me, hearing them howling at night while I sat at a fireplace in the wild let my blood freeze in my vanes.
Still, I feel safe and can enjoy the wild without fear. All the big animals, even the brown bears, are passive or shy and not a threat to humans.
Riches of the Forest
If you find mushrooms, blueberries, lingonberries, wild strawberries, etc., feel free to use them for your dinner or dessert. Also, collecting firewood in the forest to keep your fireplace alive is allowed.
Catching Dinner

You should try fishing if you are craving fresh, tasty protein for your dinner. It’s easy to catch Makrells at the coast. The lakes and rivers are very rich in pikes and perches. I prefer the super tasty trout from the rivers.
Fishing License

Fishing in the five big lakes, Vänern, Vettern, Målaren, Hjälmaren, and Storsjön, as well as along the coastline, is free of charge. You can buy a “Fiskekort”-fishing license in local stores or use a smartphone to purchase permits online for most other lakes and rivers. Please check the IFiske.se website for more information.
Call of the Wild: Overpowering Desire

Yes, I can feel it deep within me— the burning craving to venture out into untamed realms far away from the bustling masses. In Sweden, a staggering 87% of the population resides in urban areas, which stretch across a mere 1.5% of the expansive land in the southern and central parts of the country. Ah, but if only you head towards the north, a realm of sparsely populated regions awaits, calling for your exploration. Discovering these uncharted lands has always been my ardent ambition.
Best Saison For Your Adventure
Summer’s Midnight Sun in the North

Of course, the summer is truly a magnificent time in the north. One can bask in the ethereal glow of the midnight sun, witnessing the captivating phenomenon as daylight extends into the late hours of the night. However, it is in the embrace of autumn that a new kind of enchantment begins to unfold.
Autumn’s Enchantment: The Shift Begins

As the days grow shorter and the nights lengthen, a sense of calm prevails over the landscape. The air becomes crisper, carrying the promise of cooler days ahead. In this tranquil ambiance, nature unveils a breathtaking spectacle that captivates the senses—the dancing auroras of the polar lights.

The aurora borealis, mesmerizing swirls, and vibrant hues painting the night sky are a sight to behold. It fills the heavens with luminescence, casting an otherworldly glow upon the surroundings. Words cannot adequately describe this celestial phenomenon’s beauty and awe-inspiring nature. You are welcome to read my article about chasing and capturing them.
Autumn’s Palette: A Transformation of Colors

But not just the celestial display alone makes autumn in the north so special. The landscapes transform, donning the vibrant hues of the “Indian summer.” The lush green foliage of summer gives way to a kaleidoscope of warm reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a picturesque backdrop for photography enthusiasts.
Farewell to Summer’s Tiny Pests

As the temperatures drop, something else begins to disappear—the omnipresent mosquitos and insects throughout the summer months. The crisp autumn air acts as a natural deterrent, creating an environment that is blissfully free from these buzzing creatures. It allows one to explore the beauty of nature without the constant nuisance of swatting away tiny wings.
Autumn in the North: A Season of Unique Delights

So, while the summer may boast the ineffable allure of the midnight sun, autumn in the north offers its unique delights. The combination of longer nights, the possibility of witnessing the auroras, the glorious colors of the landscape, and the absence of bothersome insects makes it a season worthy of celebration beyond measure.
